On the 18th April of 2016, the renewable energy students’ association of the University of Energy and Natural Resources together with the energy department embarked on a project to erect the first solar charging and learning center on the campus of the University of Energy And Natural Resources.
The solar charging booth is made up of solar panels, batteries, inverter, a solar charge controller and an electrical outlet which will allow students around the school to access electricity when on campus without relying on the electricity coming from the grid but rather free solar power coming directly from the sun.
The aim of the Solar charging Booth is to supply electricity for electrical gadgets such as phones and laptops on campus which will in turn, reduce the cost and consumption of electricity by students being supplied by the grid during day time. Also, it is to serve as a power source during times of power outages. The solar charging booth will also serve as a learning center for students who would want to know more about solar panels and how they work.
Maintenance works will be carried out from time to time by the energy students of the school. Further improvements will be made to the system and other improved prototypes will be developed. The association is currently working on another prototype that will come with its own internet router which will provide Internet services to the students that sit under the panels to use them. In the future we hope to see better and more resourceful solar charging booths all around campuses of tertiary institutions across Ghana which will help reduce the cost and demand of electricity across tertiary institutions in Ghana.
